Formula and Assumptions

Total flooring = sum of all room areas. Add waste and divide by square feet per box to estimate boxes.

  • Room areas should be measured in square feet.
  • Separate rooms may need more waste if layouts run in different directions.

Worked Example

  • Bedroom 1 is 132 sq ft
  • Bedroom 2 is 144 sq ft
  • Hall is 48 sq ft
  • 24 sq ft per box

The measured rooms total 324 sq ft. A 10 percent waste allowance raises the order area to 356.4 sq ft before box rounding.

At 24 sq ft per box, the project needs 14.85 boxes, so 15 boxes is the minimum practical order.

Measurement Tips

  • Measure each room separately and label the notes by room.
  • Include closets and short hallway transitions in the total.
  • Confirm whether plank direction changes between rooms before choosing waste percent.

Buying Notes

  • Order the same lot when rooms will connect visually.
  • Add more overage when rooms have many doorway cuts.

Common Mistakes

  • Averaging room sizes instead of summing each room.
  • Ignoring transition strips or closets that use the same flooring.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It is an estimate based on common project formulas and the assumptions shown on the page. Always confirm package labels and local conditions before buying materials.

Should I add extra material?

Most projects need extra material for cuts, waste, damaged pieces, uneven surfaces, or future repairs. The calculator includes a waste factor where it matters.

Can I print the result?

Yes. Use the print action on the page to keep a simple copy of the inputs, formula, and estimated material list.
